The Audland Talks

Exploring the world of opera with the European Opera Centre

Leading experts are invited to Liverpool for a series of entertaining and thought-provoking talks on opera at distinguished waterfront venues. Join us in our inaugural season, introduced by the European Opera Centre’s Curator, Dr Sophie Redfern, as we uncover the world of this extravagant art-form.

A Very English Model: Country House Opera

Sophie Redfern, Christopher Watson and Rosenna East

Since Glyndebourne staged Le nozze di Figaro in 1934, country houses have become an essential summer home for opera. Sophie Redfern considers the role they play in fostering singers, composers and artists. She is joined by guests Christopher Watson, the lead architect behind Nevill Holt Opera’s RIBA Stirling Prize-shortlisted new opera house (pictured), and Rosenna East, general manager of Nevill Holt Opera, who will be discussing the acclaimed new theatre and its impact on performers and audiences.

Sophie Redfern is a music historian based at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and University of Sheffield. Christopher Watson is a director of Witherford Watson Mann Architects, winners of the 2013 Stirling Prize. Rosenna East has been general manager of Nevill Holt Opera since 2015 and was previously co-principal violinist of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
